Delivered to the First Basic Advertising Course

Project Overview

BACKGROUND

This collection, curated and sponsored by the Smithsonian, focuses on the representation of African Americans in advertising.  It studies the people, and the pictures, that shaped the voice and image of African Americans in culture through the most widely digested forms of art: advertising.

DESIGN

The introduction to the collection and publication, opening remarks by Bill Sharp delivered to the First Basic Advertising Course in 1967, mentioned the historical color of advertising as "Lilly White".  In this piece of print and digital media, I used blocks of the Smithsonian's branded black (#282829) to fill negative space that typically would have been left white.
